Sumi-e (Japanese Ink Painting)
Workshop and Courses
2025-2026
Hanato Atelier, Haarlem
Since encountering Sumi-e, I have come to value the quiet power of material, gesture, and repetition. This traditional East Asian ink practice has deepened my understanding of how making can hold memory and attention, and how knowledge is carried through heritage.
In my workshops, participants are introduced to basic techniques and sensibilities of ink painting — not only as a skill, but as a way of observing and slowing down. Through simple motifs such as bamboo, orchid, chrysanthemum, and plum blossom, we explore brushwork, rhythm, and presence.
Each course becomes a shared space of learning, where tradition is not fixed, but lived through making.
