Vessels of Remembrance is a ceramic installation exploring how memory is held, shared, and transformed through ritual objects. Inspired by Korean and Japanese memorial ceremonies, the work reflects on vessels as mediators between the living and the deceased — containers not only of offerings, but also of presence, absence, and continuity.
The installation brings together hand-built ceremonial forms, including pedestal vessels, incense holders, and urn-like structures. Their restrained palette, ranging from soft whites to deep mourning blacks, reflects the emotional spectrum of remembrance. The elevated footed forms echo traditional ritual tableware used in ancestral ceremonies, while their contemporary treatment opens the work to reflection beyond specific cultural boundaries.
Rather than reconstructing ritual itself, the installation creates a quiet space for contemplation. The vessels function as symbolic bodies that carry traces of memory, grief, gratitude, and connection across generations. Through material, form, and silence, the work asks how objects can hold remembrance within contemporary life.
Vessels of Remembrance is een keramische installatie die onderzoekt hoe herinnering wordt gedragen, gedeeld en getransformeerd door rituele objecten. Geïnspireerd door Koreaanse en Japanse herdenkingsrituelen, reflecteert het werk op keramische vaten als bemiddelaars tussen de levenden en de overledenen — dragers niet alleen van offers, maar ook van aanwezigheid, afwezigheid en continuïteit.
De installatie bestaat uit handgevormde ceremoniële vormen, waaronder voetstukken, wierookhouders en urnachtige objecten. Het ingetogen kleurenpalet, variërend van zachte wittonen tot diep rouwzwart, verwijst naar het emotionele spectrum van herinnering. De verhoogde vormen met voet verwijzen naar traditioneel ritueel tafelgerei uit voorouderrituelen, terwijl hun hedendaagse benadering ruimte opent voor reflectie voorbij specifieke culturele contexten.
In plaats van het ritueel zelf te reconstrueren, creëert de installatie een stille ruimte voor contemplatie. De vaten functioneren als symbolische lichamen die sporen dragen van herinnering, verdriet, dankbaarheid en verbondenheid over generaties heen. Via materiaal, vorm en stilte stelt het werk de vraag hoe objecten herinnering kunnen dragen binnen het hedendaagse leven.
